How to Call India From the USA: The Cheap Way in 2026

Calling India from the USA costs $1–$3/min on US carriers without a plan. With a pay-as-you-go calling app it's about $0.07/min to any Indian mobile or landline. Here's exactly how.

To call India from the USA you dial 011 91, then the 10-digit Indian number — that’s the easy part. The hard part is what your carrier charges for it: without an international plan, US carriers bill $1–$3 per minute to India, and the “unlimited India” add-ons run $10–$15 a month whether you call or not.

If you call family in India a few times a month, neither option fits. Here’s what actually works.

The dialing format first

  • From a US phone: 011 + 91 + 10-digit number (011 is the US exit code, 91 is India’s country code)
  • From any calling app: +91 followed by the 10-digit number — the app handles the exit code

Indian mobiles start with 6, 7, 8, or 9. Landlines include a city code (Delhi 11, Mumbai 22, Bengaluru 80) after +91.

Why WhatsApp doesn’t cover it

Most India calls happen on WhatsApp — until they can’t. WhatsApp needs the other side to have a smartphone, data, and the app. It can’t reach:

  • Landlines — still common with older parents and in smaller towns
  • Banks, hospitals, government offices, and any business number in India
  • Anyone whose data has run out or whose connection is too weak for VoIP-to-VoIP

For those calls you need a real phone call — just not at carrier prices.

The pay-as-you-go way: about $0.07/min

VoixCall is an international calling app with no subscription. Calls to India — mobile or landline — currently run about $0.07 per minute, and the exact live rate is shown in the app before you dial. A 30-minute catch-up with family costs roughly $2.10 instead of $30–$90 on carrier pay-per-use.

How to make your first call:

  1. Get the app (iPhone or Android) and sign up with Google, Apple, or email — takes about 30 seconds
  2. Dial +91 and the number; the India rate appears before the call starts
  3. Your first call is free (one minute, no card required), so you can hear the quality first
  4. Top up with prepaid credits from $5 — they never expire, so occasional callers don’t lose money to expiry

The call rides your Wi-Fi or data, and the person in India answers a normal phone call — no app needed on their side. Recipients see a verified caller ID, so it doesn’t look like spam.
