How to Call Nigeria From the USA Without the Carrier Markup

  • From a US phone: 011 + 234 + the Nigerian number without its leading 0
  • From a calling app: +234 then the number without the leading 0

Example: Lagos mobile 0803 123 4567 becomes +234 803 123 4567. Nigerian mobiles start with 070, 080, 081, 090, or 091 (drop the 0 after +234).

Why calls to Nigeria are expensive everywhere

Nigerian termination fees — what local networks charge to complete an incoming international call — are among the highest in Africa, and every provider pays them. That’s why there’s no genuinely “free” way to ring a Nigerian phone number. What varies is the markup on top.
